The airstrike which was reportedly approved by President Trump comes on the heels of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran following last week’s attack on the US embassy in Baghdad and the killing of an American contractor which the US says Qasem Soleimani ordered.
An iranian official who opted for anonymity revealed that Al-Muhandis had arrived the airport in a convoy to welcome Soleimani who had just arrived from Lebanon or Syria. The air raid which occurred on the early hours of friday 3rd january,2020 as soon as he got off the plane to be received by Muhandis killing them all. It was further revealed that Soleimani’s body was identified by a ring he wore
The move which has divided officials in Washington with the Republicans praising Trump while the Democrats have condemned it accusing Trump of trying to drag Americans into another war without the approval of the senate.
Soleimani has been accused by America of masterminding the killing of hundreds of Americans and coalition service members and the wounding of a thousand more
Tehran has responded to the killing by saying “ The US act of international terrorism, targeting and assassinating general Soleimani-The most effective force fighting Daesh(ISIS) Al-Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al is extremely dangerous and a foolish escalation” Iran’s foreign minister Javad Zarif also tweeted “ the US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism”
It is unclear what retaliatory actions Tehran would take over the incident but one is to be expected in the coming days.
